Mississippi takes two from UTSA on Saturday

OXFORD, Miss. — Mississippi defeated UTSA by scores of 9-1 and 8-0 on Saturday during the second day of play at the Ole Miss Classic.

Jade Smith had a pair of hits to lead the Roadrunners (5-9), while Taylor Oberg had a double.

Madi Osias helped lead the Rebels (13-3) with a three-run homer and five scoreless innings in game two.

After being held scoreless through the first three innings, Ole Miss tallied nine runs in the final three frames to score a 9-1 run-rule victory in the opener.

UTSA starting pitcher Lizzy Fox scattered three hits over three spotless innings to start the afternoon, but the Rebels broke through for two in the fourth, four in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

The lone run for the Roadrunners came in the top of the sixth, when Taylor Oberg lined a one-out double down the left-field line. Stephanie Money then reached on an error that allowed Oberg to come around and break up the shutout.

In the nightcap, the Rebels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on Osias’ three-run shot and the home squad added a run on an RBI grounder in the second.

Ole Miss then picked up two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the run-rule 8-0 victory. Osias went the distance in the circle and picked up eight strikeouts, while she allowed just two hits.

UTSA will close tournament play at 10 a.m. on Sunday against Stephen F. Austin (4-10).
