BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — UTSA received a sixth-place finish from its distance medley relay on Wednesday and two athletes advanced to Thursday's running finals to highlight the Roadrunners' opening day of action at this week's Conference USA Indoor Championships, which are being contested at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The quartet of Charlette Janicek, Paige Patterson, Shantel Swift and Stephanie Wangui passed the baton in a season-best time of 11:54.70 and that gave UTSA three points.
The Roadrunners sit in 10th place in the team standings after five scored events. Middle Tennessee is leading the way with 38 points, while UTEP (32) and UAB (24) round out the top three.
Meanwhile, Evelyn Clark and Wangui advanced to the running finals.
Clark clocked a personal-best time of 55.98 to place seventh overall in the 400 meters preliminary heats.
Wangui, the defending champion in the 800m, ran the fourth-fastest prelims time, 2:12.55, and she will look to successfully defend her title at 2:50 p.m. on Thursday.
The final day of action is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m.
