SAN ANTONIO — Randee Crawford hit a go-ahead two-run homer to lift UTSA to a 5-4 win over Virginia, but Tulsa took the nightcap 6-0 as the Roadrunners split a pair of games on the second day of the UTSA Classic at Roadrunner Field.
Kendall Burton had three hits during the day, while Tess Soefje launched her second homer in as many days to help lead the Roadrunners (4-4). Jade Smith also drove in a run and Lizzy Fox did not allow an earned run and struck out seven in 8.1 innings of work.
The Cavaliers (3-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opener with an RBI double, but UTSA wasted no time in getting the run back on Soefje’s opposite field shot in the bottom of the panel.
Two innings later, Virginia jumped out to a 4-1 lead with the help of a pair of UTSA errors.
However, the Roadrunners rallied in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own to take the lead for good.
After two outs to start the frame, Erica Sanchez walked and Taylor Oberg reached base on a Virginia error. Smith plated a run with an infield hit, while Oberg raced home on a wild pitch to pull the home squad within a run, 4-3.
Following the wild pitch, Crawford rocketed her two-run homer deep over the wall in left field to score Smith and give UTSA a 5-4 lead.
Fox relieved Chelsea Parker, who gave up just one earned run through her four innings, and the sophomore held the Cavaliers to three hits over the final three innings to pick up her second save of the season.
In the nightcap, Emily Watson struck out 17 and allowed just two hits and a walk to lead the Golden Hurricane (7-2) to their fourth win of the weekend.
Tulsa jumped ahead with an unearned run in the top of the first. UTSA tried to even the score in the bottom of the frame when Burton lined a one-out double to right, but she was left stranded.
Watson and Fox both settled into a groove in the circle from there. Making her second appearance of the day, Fox allowed just two hits over the next 4.1 innings before exiting during a two-run sixth inning for the Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa doubled its score with three runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
The Roadrunners will close tournament play on Sunday when they will face Virginia at 11:30 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. matchup with Tulsa.
