FULLERTON, Calif. — San Diego State got two unearned runs in the third inning and made them stand up in a 2-0 victory against UTSA on Sunday in the final game of the Titans Classic.
Kendall Burton reached base in all three of her plate appearances with a single, double and a walk, while Chelsea Parker scattered five hits and picked up a strikeout to lead the Roadrunners (2-3). Alyssa Cummings also tallied her team-leading sixth hit of the weekend with a single in the second inning.
Meanwhile, Stefania Aradillas and Molly Sturdivant each drove in a run and Erica Romero earned the win with 4.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Aztecs (3-2).
Playing as the visiting team for the fifth time in as many games to start the season, UTSA avoided trouble in the bottom of the first when San Diego State opened the frame with a pair of hits. Parker settled down and got three consecutive outs, including a strikeout, to keep the game scoreless.
Burton shot a two-out double down the line in the top of the third inning that chased Aztecs starter Julie McDonald from the contest. Romero got a strikeout to end the threat and San Diego State jumped ahead with three hits and an error for its two unearned runs in the bottom of the panel.
Both pitchers found a groove following the inning as neither team presented a threat until the Roadrunners came to bat in the sixth.
Burton punched a one-out single up the middle and Randee Crawford dropped a two-out hit down the line in left. The junior advanced to second on the throw and UTSA had a pair in scoring position, but were unable to come up with a run-scoring hit.
Romero then retired UTSA in order in the top of the seventh to close out the 2-0 victory.
Parker fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss, while Romero improved to 2-0.
The Roadrunners will be back in action next weekend when they will host the three-day UTSA Classic at Roadrunner Field. UTSA will begin play in the event with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against North Dakota (1-3) on Friday, Feb. 19.
