SAN ANTONIO — Joao Riquelme posted a straight-sets victory in singles, but it was not enough and No. 65 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi downed UTSA, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Riquelme, a sophomore from Chile, took care of Paul Cook with a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 5 singles to post the only point of the afternoon for the Roadrunners (1-4) in a match that was stopped after the Islanders (7-2) clinched.
The visitors took a 1-0 lead by winning a pair of doubles matches to start the day.
Ricardo Mayagoitia and Guillaume Rauseo teamed up for a 6-2 triumph over Eric Buchalter and Riquelme at No. 2. Mitchell Cook and Paul Cook secured the point with a 6-2 win against Christian Carrillo and Jake Rother at No. 3.
In singles, Kevin Bettendroffer gave the Islanders a 2-0 advantage with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Diogo Casa at the top spot.
The lead grew to 3-0 when Rauseo outlasted Carrillo, 6-3, 7-5, on the third court.
Minutes later, Riquelme scored his win at No. 5, but Mayagoitia ended the contest with his 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Rother at No. 2 just seconds later.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Feb. 20 when they travel to Lubbock to face 14th-ranked Texas Tech (10-0).
