SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s basketball team will look to turn its luck around this weekend when it hosts UAB and Middle Tennessee at the Convocation Center.
UTSA (4-8, 0-2 C-USA) heads into the weekend on its longest losing skid of the season with four straight losses. The Roadrunners went into overtime in their last outing on Sunday and suffered a 49-48 heartbreaker at Rice. UTSA trailed most of the way but slowly made up the deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on a Crystal Chidomere layup. The Roadrunners scored only three times in their first overtime game of the year and were held scoreless the rest of the way.
Despite the loss, Tesha Smith paced the team with her fifth double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Smith also leads the season stat sheet averaging 12.6 points per game and a team-best 9.1 caroms a night. Meanwhile, Carlie Heineman trails with 8.2 points per game and is shooting 45 percent (23-of-51) from 3-point range.
UAB heads to the Alamo City with a 7-5 overall record and 0-1 mark in Conference USA action. The Blazers' loss to Middle Tennessee last Sunday snapped a five-game win streak.
The Blazers are led by Chelsee Black, as she’s averaging 13.5 points per game and adds 3.1 assists a night. Deanna Kuzmanic adds 12.4 points per game and has made 30 triples for a 35.3 shooting percentage. Kuzmanic also has a team second-best 13 steals. As a team, UAB is outscoring the opposition by 8.5 points and grabbing 9.3 more rebounds, which ranks 24th in the NCAA.
Middle Tennessee (7-5, 1-0 C-USA) will take on UTEP on Thursday before traveling to San Antonio for Saturday’s contest.
