SAN ANTONIO — UTSA returned to its winning ways with a home-opening 6-1 victory against St. Mary's on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (2-1) opened the match by winning two of the three doubles contests against the 11th-ranked Rattlers, who are a local Division II program.
After the No. 15 duo of Cristina Lopez and Hannah Petersen came off the second court with a 6-0 win against Nicole Karaklis and Alena Shichkova, UTSA picked up the early lead with victories at the other two spots in the lineup.
Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell Canudas made quick work of the sixth-ranked pairing of Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman, 6-1, and Lina Hallgren and Charlene Tiwari clinched the point with a 6-2 triumph against Ally Maciel and Mariela Sarinana on court three.
It was all Roadrunners in the six singles matches.
Rosell Canudas defeated Lopez in straight sets at the top spot in the lineup, 6-2, 6-1, to put UTSA in front by two and that was followed by Karaklis' 6-2, 6-1 win against Tyra Timm at the No. 4 slot.
Junger clinched the team victory with her 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Denton on the second court and Hallgren followed with a straight-sets win of her own against Maciel at the sixth spot (6-3, 6-4).
The Roadrunners' other trimuph of the afternoon came from Tiwari, who downed Petersen in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6).
UTSA will return to action at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Incarnate Word (0-1).
