NACOGDOCHES — UTSA opened its spring campaign with a 6-1 victory against Prairie View A&M on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (1-0) jumped on top early in the inaugural meeting between the two schools by winning both completed doubles matches.
Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell Canudas blanked Shaddae Findley and Stacy Lackey at the top position, 6-0, and Lina Hallgren and Charlene Tiwari clinched the point with their 6-3 win against Tatiana Ruhl and Sydney Thomas at the third spot in the lineup.
UTSA then came off the six singles courts with five triumphs against the Panthers (0-3).
Junger shut out Trinity Randolph at the No. 2 spot (6-0, 6-0) to push the advantage to 2-0 and Tiwari downed Findley on the fifth court in her first collegiate dual match, 6-2, 6-1. Rosell Canudas kept the momemtum going and clinched the match victory with her 6-3, 6-3 win against Thomas at the top of the lineup.
Hallgren (7-5, 6-0 against Timara Maxwell at No. 6) and Nicole Karaklis (6-5, 7-5 against Lackey at No. 4) picked up the Roadrunners' other singles triumphs of the day.
UTSA will return to the courts on Sunday when it takes on former Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin (1-0) at 1 p.m.
