#5 Texas A&M downs 66th-ranked UTSA in season opener, 6-1

COLLEGE STATION — Eric Buchalter won at No. 5 singles, but it was not enough as No. 5 Texas A&M posted a 6-1 victory against UTSA on Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

Buchalter, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., rallied from a 6-4 setback to Kevin Lam in the opening set for a 7-5 decision in the second before winning the super tiebreaker, 10-8, to hand the 66th-ranked Roadrunners their only point of the match.

Texas A&M grabbed the doubles point to start the day, as the tandem of Arthur Rinderknech and Jackson Withrow beat Fabian Brand and Diogo Casa, 6-3, at No. 1, and A.J. Catanzariti and Shane Vinsant registered an equal score against Buchalter and Mark Ginting on the second court.

After wins at the fourth and second spots to open singles competition, Sam Giammalva clinched the contest for the Aggies with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Brand at No. 6.

The Roadrunners will return to action next weekend when they travel to Norman, Okla., to compete at the ITA Indoor Kick-Off Weekend.
