Makevic leads UTSA men at season-opening Texas A&M 11-Team Invitational

COLLEGE STATION — Dusan Makevic raced to a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters and that led UTSA at Saturday's season-opening Texas A&M 11-Team Invitational.

Makevic, a senior from Sabac, Serbia, clocked a personal-best time of 8:11.85, an improvement of nearly three-and-a-half seconds from his previous top mark (8:15.27 recorded as a sophomore at Louisiana-Monroe), and that propelled him to second place on the program's all-time performance chart. He missed breaking Olympian Roger Soler's 31-year-old school record of 8:10.09 by less than two seconds in placing a half second behind BYU gold medalist Rory Linkletter, who broke the tape in 8:11.35.

The Roadrunners also received a combined six points in the weight throw after Victor Perez (PR 60-5¼/18.42m) and Levi Jordan (PR 53-1¾/16.20m) finished in fourth and eighth place, respectively.

Meanwhile, UTSA's distance medley relay team crossed the finish line in fourth place in a time of 10:10.04.

Jurmarcus Shelvin clocked a personal-best time of 47.76 en route to fifth place in the 400m and that moved him up to fourth on the program's all-time performance chart.

Gabe Vargas registered a career-best measurement of 53-9¾ (16.40m) in the shot put and that was good for sixth place, while Ty Anderson scratched out a half point after tying for eighth place in the high jump with his clearance of 6-6¾ (2.00m).

The Roadrunners' other points of the one-day meet came from its 1,600m relay team, which finished in eighth place with a time of 3:16.06.

UTSA scored 28.5 points at the one-day meet and finished in ninth place in the team standings. Meet host Texas A&M claimed the team title with 146 points, while Texas (86.5) and BYU (72.5) rounded out the top three.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the John Thomas Terriers Classic in Boston, Mass.
