UTSA to square off with I-35 rival Texas State on Thursday night

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will make the trek north on Thursday to take on I-35 rival Texas State at Strahan Coliseum. The 63rd all-time meeting between the two programs is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Winners of their last two contests, the Roadrunners will head to San Marcos with a 2-2 overall record following last weekend's Thanksgiving Classic. UTSA picked up wins against Illinois State and Houston Baptist on Friday and Sunday, respectively, to earn the tournament title. Niaga Mitchell-Cole was named the event's Most Valuable Player, while Akunna Elonu and Tesha Smith were all-tournament team selections.

Through four games this season, UTSA is averaging 67.2 points per game, while opponents are barely outscoring the Roadrunners with an average of 67.5 points per contest.

Smith leads the charge for UTSA, as she is one of three players to average double figures with 11 points per night to go along with 8.5 rebounds per outing. This past weekend, the San Antonio native picked up her eighth career double-double with a career-best 22 points and 11 boards against Illinois State.

Texas State, which owns a 2-4 mark in the early season, is on a three-game losing streak, which all came at the Cancun Challenge-Mayan Tournament.

The Bobcats are being outscored by its opponents by nearly 20 points a game and shooting 32.6 percent from the field. Taeler Deer leads Texas State with 12.2 points a game with a team-leading 14 steals.
