SAN ANTONIO — Tesha Smith paced four Roadrunners in double figures with a career-high 29 points and helped UTSA cruise to a 106-65 victory against Howard Payne on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.
It was the program's highest point total since Dec. 7, 1993 when the Roadrunners (3-4) downed Prairie View A&M by a score of 105-38.
Smith also grabbed 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the year and ninth overall in her career.
Meanwhile, Sara Anastasieska also notched a season best of 15 points to go along with two boards and an assist. Akunna Elonu added 14 points and Dempsey Thornton 13 and six rebounds.
Smith sparked the UTSA offense early after netting half of the team’s points in the first quarter with 16. The Roadrunners 32 points in the opening period were the most in any quarter this season.
In the second, Thornton netted nine of the team’s 16 points after coming off the bench for the first time this season. UTSA headed into the locker room at the half leading 48-34 and shooting 63.6 percent (21-of-33) from the field.
UTSA kept on marching in the second half and outscored Howard Payne (3-6) 58-31 for the 41-point victory.
The Roadrunners were dominant down low as they scored 62 points in the paints.
However, the Yellow Jackets tied for the program record of 3-pointers allowed with 13 (13-of-33).
UTSA will return to the hardwood on Saturday when it hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m.
