SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will begin a five-game home stand on Tuesday when it hosts Howard Payne. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
Howard Payne is one of two non-Division I programs that the Roadrunners (2-4) will square off with this week.
UTSA heads into the week following Sunday's 80-41 road loss at No. 17 Oklahoma. The Roadrunners played close to even with the Sooners through the first half and were led by Carlie Heineman’s 11 first-half points. The San Antonio product had a career day with four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Tesha Smith continues to sit atop the season box score with her average of 10.3 points per game and she also is grabbing a team-best 7.8 rebounds. Niaga Mitchell-Cole follows closely behind with 9.8 points per outing and leads the team with 16 steals.
Howard Payne makes the trek to the Alamo City with a 3-5 overall record and off a 61-59 win against Schreiner on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets used a late 8-0 run in the final two minutes of play to come from behind for the win. HPU has yet to play a home game and will not open at home until Jan. 7 when it welcomes East Texas Baptist.
Opponents are outscoring the Yellow Jackets by a slight margin of 2.8 points per game, as they are averaging 65.8 points per game and shooting 35.3 percent from the field. Howard Payne has recorded double-digit free throws in all but two of its games this season.
Danyel Bradley leads Howard Payne with 19.3 points per game and she is shooting 50.5 percent (51-of-101) from the field, including 43.3 percent (13-of-30) from 3-point range.
