Middle Tennessee downs UTSA in Saturday's season finale, 42-7

SAN ANTONIO — Brent Stockstill passed for 257 yards and a touchdown to help Middle Tennessee down UTSA, 42-7, in the Roadrunners’ season finale on Saturday afternoon at the Alamodome.

Dalton Sturm threw for 140 yards and a touchdown for the Roadrunners (3-9, 3-5 C-USA), while Tyrell Clay made his first career start — UTSA's 23rd first-time starter this season — and he rushed for a career-high 71 yards on 14 carries, including a career-long 31-yarder in the first quarter. JaBryce Taylor hauled in four passes from Sturm for 70 yards and the team’s only score.

The Blue Raiders (7-5, 6-2 C-USA) rushed for four touchdowns, led by a pair from Shane Tucker, and totaled 456 yards of offense as they scored the first 42 points of the afternoon. Stockskill led the way by completing 24 of his 30 attempts, including a 7-yard scoring toss to Terry Pettis.

The visitors got on the board first on a 14-yard scamper around left end by Tucker. The extra point by Cody Clark made it 7-0 with 4:20 left in the opening stanza.

Middle Tennessee tacked on a pair of scores in the second quarter to push its lead to 21-0 at the half.

Jordan Parker capped a 13-play, 75-yard scoring march with a 7-yard scamper up the middle to paydirt. On the Blue Raiders’ next possession, Stockstill found Pettis open in the end zone from seven yards out to put the finishing touch on a 12-play, 78-yard drive.

Middle Tennessee opened the second half with a short field thanks to a kick-catch interference call on a UTSA punt. Tucker capped a 41-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run and the extra point made it 28-0 with 11:53 left in the quarter.

The Blue Raiders added to their cushion when Alex Dale came up with an interception off a tipped pass and took it back 34 yards for the score just before the end of the third quarter.

Kamani Thomas helped provide the final score after his 5-yard touchdown run with 8:48 left to play.

The Roadrunners got on the board with 6:33 remaining when Taylor hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Sturm with one hand. The score was the third this season for Taylor, who also finished the campaign with 29 catches for 472 yards (16.3 ypc).

Playing the final game of his collegiate career, David Morgan II had three catches for 34 yards. The Marble Falls native finished with 45 receptions for 566 yards and a program-record five touchdowns, while he pushed his career numbers to 85 catches, 1,104 yards and eight scores.

Duke Wheeler led the defense with 13 tackles, his sixth double-digit output of the season, to go along with a forced fumble. The senior finished the campaign with a team-leading 93 tackles, which is the third-best total in program annals.
