SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s basketball team will host its annual Thanksgiving Classic this weekend at the Convocation Center.
Houston Baptist, Illinois State and Omaha will join the host Roadrunners for the two-day event. The Huskies and Mavericks will tip off the event on at 2 p.m. on Friday and that will be followed by UTSA hosting the Redbirds two hours later.
Sunday’s action will begin with a noon matchup between Illinois State and Omaha, followed by UTSA and Houston Baptist.
The Roadrunners have dropped their first two games of the year, both on the road, at then-No. 11 Texas and Abilene Christian. Niaga Mitchell-Cole poured in a career-best 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, in UTSA's setback in Abilene last Saturday.
Friday’s contest against Illinois State will be a first in school annals, while Sunday’s game against HBU will be the second-ever. UTSA won the last meeting against the Huskies back in 1999 in San Antonio by a score of 66-56.
Houston Baptist (1-2) heads to the Alamo City coming off a win against Paul Quinn last Friday. Rachel Arthur has led the Huskies in scoring the last two contests and is averaging 14.7 points per game.
Illinois State (1-2) dropped a 74-65 decision to UIC and its only win came last week against Murray State. Three Redbirds are averaging in double figures with Shakeela Fowler leading the way with 16.3 points per night.
The only opponent UTSA will not face is Omaha (3-1). The Mavericks are on a two-game win streak with their only loss against North Dakota. Mikaela Shaw leads the team with 17 points an outing.
