SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s basketball team will open its 2015-16 campaign on the road for the third straight season when it heads to 11th-ranked Texas on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
UTSA heads into the upcoming season off a 16-15 campaign that saw the Roadrunners post an 11-7 record in Conference USA and earn a first-round by at the conference tournament.
Head women’s basketball coach Lubomyr Lichonczak brings back eight letterwinners from a season ago, including a pair of starters. Seniors Akunna Elonu and Mathilde Hergott lead the charge for the Roadrunners. Elonu averaged 7.3 points per game and Hergott 5.4.
The Roadrunners used a pair of exhibition games as tune-ups for the upcoming season and picked up wins against Trinity and St. Edward’s. UTSA was predicted to finish seventh in the C-USA Preseason Poll.
Texas welcomes the Roadrunners for its season opener following a 24-11 campaign that saw it reach the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Longhorns check in at No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches’ Preseason Poll and No. 12 in The Associated Press Top 25 rankings. Texas also had four players selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team with Lashann Higgs tabbed Preseason Freshman of the Year. Ariel Atkins, Imani Boyette (McGee-Stafford) and Kelsey Lang each earned a spot on the honorable mention team.
