Western Kentucky edges UTSA on Sunday afternoon, 1-0

SAN ANTONIO — Shayna Dheel’s goal just 18 seconds into the second half proved to be the only goal of the match as visiting Western Kentucky edged UTSA by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Park West Athletics Complex.

Katherine Tesno recorded 10 saves to lead the Roadrunners (1-10-1, 1-3 C-USA). It was the second time this season that the junior has reached double-digit stops, while Gracie Knight had four shots to pace the offense.

Meanwhile, goalie Allison Leone came away with four saves for the Hilltoppers (6-3-3, 2-1-1 C-USA). Dheel’s goal was her first of the fall and she had three shots of the bench for WKU.

Neither team was able to score in the first 45 minutes. Sam Batley nearly put UTSA on top in the 25th minute with a shot from 25 yards out that hit the right post.

WKU wasted no time after intermission as it took the opening kick and dribbled down the far side of the field. Haley Baldridge put a cross from the right side toward the goal, where Dheel deposited the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

UTSA upped its attack to try and find the equalizer, but the Hilltoppers defense held. The Roadrunners had six shots, including a header off a corner kick by Brittany von Schneidau in the 62nd minute.

However, Leone and WKU were able to salt away the final minutes of the second half to come away with the 1-0 victory.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 9 when they host UTEP (8-4-1, 1-1-1 C-USA) at Park West Athletics Complex.
