SAN ANTONIO — UTSA opened its exhibition slate on Saturday with a 59-50 victory against Trinity.
Saturday was the first time the four 10-minute quarters were used since the NCAA passed the new rules changes. All 11 players saw time on the hardwood and all recorded at least one point.
Niaga Mitchell-Cole led the club with 12 points and six rebounds, while Kasia Kiejdrowska added 10 points with five boards.
Meanwhile, Crystal Chidomere had a team-high five steals to go with eight points and two rebounds.
As a team, the Roadrunners shot 33 percent (20-of-60) from the field and went 15-of-24 from the charity stripe.
The rusty start for UTSA had Trinity leading through the first four minutes of action but a foul at the 6:11 mark brought Mitchell-Cole to the free throw line. The senior made her first of two, which tied the game, and the Roadrunners never looked back.
In the second period, the Tigers made it a two-point contest after starting the second on a 6-0 run to make it 16-14. The Roadrunners then utilized a 7-0 run to pull away from the visiting team and maintained a steady lead into the half.
It wasn’t until the third quarter that UTSA held a double-digit lead over Trinity that saw the Roadrunners lead by as many as 17 to end the period.
The Tigers battled in the fourth quarter and ended the contest scoring the final seven points.
Trinity’s Mollie Hughes led the team with 15 points, to go with four rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks.
UTSA will match-up with St. Edward’s in its final exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 8. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
