SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s basketball team will host Trinity on Saturday in the first of two exhibition games before the start of the regular season.
UTSA heads into the 2015-16 campaign off a 16-15 overall record and 11-7 mark in Conference USA action. The Roadrunners finished in an unexpected tie for fourth in the circuit and earned a first-round bye.
Head women’s basketball coach Lubomyr Lichonczak welcomes back eight letterwinners and five newcomers. Lichonczak will have some holes to fill with the loss of three of the team’s top players – Kamra King (11.7 ppg, 2.1 spg, 2.0 apg), Ashley Spaletta (6.8 ppg), and Mannasha Bell (7.1 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 2.1 spg).
Akunna Elonu, the team’s top rebounder last season, heads into her final season as a Roadrunner. Elonu averaged 7.3 rebounds and 7.3 points per game and added 20 blocks.
Meanwhile, Tesha Smith, the Roadrunners’ sixth-woman, returns for her junior season after contributing 7.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per outing last season. Smith also shot 48.7 percent (97-of-199) from the field.
Lichonczak heads into his third season at the helm of the Roadrunners program and has compiled a 30-32 record in his time in the Alamo City.
