UTSA ends season with 4-0 setback at Rice on Thursday

HOUSTON — Rice scored a pair of goals in each half to hand visiting UTSA a 4-0 defeat in the regular season finale for both teams on Thursday night at the Rice Soccer Complex.

Isabella Sanchez made six saves in the first half for the Roadrunners (1-15-2, 1-8-1 C-USA), who saw their 10th season of play come to an end. Meanwhile, Sam Batley and Brittany von Schneidau each made their 18th starts of the season to become the first freshmen non-goalies to start each contest of a season since Anka Grotle in 2010.

Dominique Mazero’s steal and unassisted goal in the fifth minute proved to be enough for the Owls (10-6-2, 6-3-1 C-USA). Nia Stallings then added a score following an assist from Madeleine Lundberg in the 35th minute for a 2-0 cushion at halftime.

The Rice attack continued in the second half as Darcy Mickalow picked up her first goal of the season with a strike in the 75th minute. The home squad would find the back of the net one last time in the 81st minute off the foot of Annie Walker.

Owls goalie Zoe Pochobradsky made two saves in 75 minutes of action, while Kara Dugali came in to keep the clean sheet intact with 15 scoreless minutes to close the contest.
