SAN ANTONIO — UTSA seeks to win its second straight match when it squares off with UTEP at 1 p.m. on Sunday in its annual Dig Pink match.
The Roadrunners head into the contest with a 15-7 overall record and 6-2 mark in the league, which places UTSA third behind first-place Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic.
Sunday’s meeting will be the second of the year with UTEP. UTSA grabbed the win back on Oct. 11 in straight sets.
The Roadrunners welcome the Miners with the second-best hitting percentage in the league (.254) while holding opponents to a .170 attack percentage. UTSA is also represented in the top four in the individual statistics, as Kylie Schott is third in the circuit with her .388 hitting percentage and Dajana Boskovic stands fourth with 4.02 kills per set.
UTEP (7-16, 1-7 C-USA) will make the trek to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on Southern Miss on Friday before heading back to Texas.
The Miners have lost six straight and last picked up a win against Middle Tennessee on Sept. 27. Despite UTEP’s spotty offense that has the Miners being outhit, .206-.157, the team is third in the nation in digs per set with its conference-leading mark of 17.48.
Three Miners averaging more than three digs per set with Sarah Villa leading the charge at 4.12. Ashley Peak adds 3.44 per set and Lindsey Larson another 3.20. UTEP also ranks third in C-USA in blocks per set and are led by Kylie Baumgartner’s 1.10.
With Sunday being the Roadrunners’ Dig Pink match, all fans are encouraged to wear pink to support those with the disease and for those have lost the battle. The Roadrunners will hold a silent auction in the front lobby of the Convocation Center and the winner will be announced in the third set. All proceeds from the auction will benefit breast cancer research.
