BEAUMONT — Mark Ginting and Harley Pearson each won singles flights at this weekend's Ron Westbrooks Invitational at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Ginting cruised through the Flight Two bracket with four straight victories, while Pearson went undefeated in four matches of a round robin format in Flight Four.
Ginting, a native of Jakarta, Indonesia, opened the event with a 6-0, 6-2 sweep of Steven McMullan of host Lamar. He then posted a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Ethan Ammon of UT Rio Grande Valley before moving into the championship match by virtue of a withdraw by Sebastian Mortier of Incarnate Word. In the final, Ginting took care of Logan Powell of Tyler Junior College with a 6-3, 7-5 decision.
Meanwhile, Pearson also registered four wins in his flight. The Melbourne, Australia, product beat Trey Crysel of Lamar, 6-3, 6-0, before outlasting Sindre Hellesmark of Tyler JC, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. He then downed Andres Hernandez of UTRGV, 6-3, 7-5, and Andre Buchanan-Dempsey of UIW, 6-2, 6-0, to claim the Flight Four title.
In doubles, Ginting paired with sophomore Ricardo Gonzalez in Flight One. The duo dropped a 7-5 decision to Lukas Grubelnig and Benny Schweizer of Lamar and, after a bye, fell to Juuso Laitinen and McMullan of Lamar, 7-6, in the consolation final.
Pearson teamed up with Tyler Junior College's Lars Hellesmark in Flight Two doubles. The pair fell to Hoverson and Vander Heiden of UIW, 7-5, in the first round and, also after a bye, dropped a 6-4 contest to Hernandez and Cosme Jubera of UTRGV in the consolation final.
The Roadrunners will conclude their fall tournament slate at next weekend's USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship in Houston. The four-day event is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Oct. 24.
