Townend leads UTSA at Jim West Challenge

BOERNE — Brogan Townend tied for 36th to lead UTSA to 13th place at the Jim West Challenge, which concluded on Tuesday at Tapatio Springs Hill Country Golf Course (6,373 yards/par 72).

Townend carded a 4-over-par 76 in the final round to close out a 224 (74-74-76). The senior from Blackburn, England, posted a pair of birdies and finished the event with 42 pars, three more than any other player in the 72-person field.

Nikki Long was one shot behind Townend for a tie for 44th at 225. The sophomore from San Antonio Johnson High School posted a 3-over 75 on Tuesday after turning in a 76 and 74 the previous two rounds.

Julie Houston and Lara Weinstein finished in a tie for 57th at 231. Houston bounced back from an 80 on Sunday with a 77 and 72, while Weinstein recorded rounds of 77, 78 and 76. Becky McGeehan rounded out the UTSA lineup in 70th (90-75-78—243).

The Roadrunners finished with a 307-300-301—908. Kent State won the team title with a 12-under 852, followed by Florida State (864), Texas A&M (867), Texas Tech (870) and Texas (871).

Texas Tech's Gabby Barker and Kansas State's Michaela Finn tied for individual medalist honors at 5-under 211.

UTSA will return to action in two weeks at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin. The two-day event is scheduled to start on Monday, Oct. 19.
