NEW ORLEANS, La. — Former UTSA standout defensive tackle Ashaad Mabry officially was added to the New Orleans Saints' 10-man practice squad on Wednesday, four days after he was named to the club's 53-man active roster but waived the following day. He is the first Roadrunner to make a National Football League roster in the program's five-year history.
Mabry appeared in all four games for the Saints in the preseason and he racked up 14 total tackles (10 solo).
The 6-foot-3, 315-pounder, was an honorable mention All-Conference USA selection his final two seasons as a Roadrunner. The San Antonio MacArthur High School product was second among the team’s defensive linemen with 49 tackles, six of which went for loss, a year ago. That came on the heels of a junior campaign that saw him register 41 stops, which led all defensive linemen, and 2.5 of those came behind the line of scrimmage, including a half sack in the program’s first-ever Conference USA tilt at UTEP. All told, he appeared in 46 games as a Roadrunner, including 28 starting assignments.
Former UTSA track & field All-American Teddy Williams is the only other Roadrunners student-athlete to be a member of the NFL. Williams has played for six teams — the Dallas Cowboys (2010), Indianapolis Colts (2012), Arizona Cardinals (2013), Chicago Bears (2014), Jacksonville Jaguars (2014) and Carolina Panthers (2015) — during his six-year professional career.
