UTSA blanks Florida Atlantic on Sunday for first win of season

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Goalie Katherine Tesno made Lauren Hodgdon’s goal in the 37th minute stand with a career-high 11 saves as UTSA snapped a nine-match winless streak with a 1-0 win over Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon.

The shutout was the first for the Roadrunners (1-8-1, 1-1 C-USA) since a 5-0 win over Southern Miss on Oct. 30, 2014. Tesno made three stops in the opening half before she recorded eight saves over the final 45 minutes.

“I’m so proud of our team right now,” head coach Greg Sheen said. “This was a total team effort and a total team win. Special kudos to Kat Tesno, who, without question, put together the best performance that I’ve ever seen from her.”

The Owls (6-6, 0-2 C-USA) totaled 25 shots on the afternoon, but they were unable to sneak one past Tesno en route to their fifth consecutive defeat.

Hodgdon broke the scoreless tie in the 37th minute with an unassisted goal past Florida Atlantic keeper Sydney Drinkwater. The senior dribbled into the penalty box and rifled a shot from 15 yards out that sailed into the back of the net for what proved to be the only goal of the contest.

Facing a 1-0 deficit, Florida Atlantic turned up the pressure to test the UTSA defense following halftime. After facing a flurry early in the second half, the Roadrunners defense limited the Owls to two shots over the final 10 minutes to salt away the victory.

The win closed a nine-match stretch of games away from home for UTSA, who will host Marshall (8-1-2, 1-0-1 C-USA) and Western Kentucky (4-3-2, 0-1 C-USA) next weekend at Park West Athletics Complex.

“We’re excited to get back home for another round of conference games next weekend and we look forward to seeing many of our fans in attendance,” Sheen said.

Kickoff between the Roadrunners and Thundering Herd is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2.
