CORPUS CHRISTI — The UTSA men's tennis team opened the 2015 fall campaign with four victories at last weekend's Marco & Catering Islanders Open.
In the doubles main draw, Fabian Brand and Mark Ginting advanced to the second round with an 8-6 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Paul Cook and Ricardo Mayagoitia. The duo later fell to UT-Rio Grande Valley’s tandem of Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jensen by an 8-3 deficit in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Eric Buchalter and Harley Pearson posted an 8-6 triumph over UTRGV’s Ethan Ammon and Elliot Johnstone in the first round, but they were ousted in the semifinals with an 8-2 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Kevin Bettenfroffer and Guillaume Rauseo.
In singles action, Ginting advanced to the quarterfinal round with a walkover victory against the host team's Arthur Bedel. The sophomore from Indonesia then fell to Mayagoitia, 6-1, 6-2. Pearson eliminated UTRGV's Cosme Jubera Munoz in the first round (6-2, 5-7, 6-3) before being eliminated by Bettendroffer, 7-5, 6-1.
UTSA will return to the court this weekend at the Rice Fall Invitational in Houston. The three-day tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday.
