CORPUS CHRISTI — Nicole Karaklis advanced to the quarterfinal round in singles play to lead the UTSA women's tennis team at last weekend's Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open.
Karaklis, who had an opening-round bye after coming into the event as the No. 2 seed in the draw, began her final season as a Roadrunner with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-3 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Alexandra Belle in the second round of play. However, her tournament came to an end in the quarterfinals after Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Hortense Boscher downed her in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).
Sonia Madroñal Medina picked up the Roadrunners' other singles victory of the weekend. The sophomore defeated UT-Rio Grande Valley's Reegan Greenwood in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 10-5, but her run came to an end in the second round when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Jelena Dzinic downed her in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).
Meanwhile, Madroñal Medina also teamed up with Lina Hallgren for UTSA's lone doubles triumph of the weekend. The pair handed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Kerry Gahlos and Marina Miguel an 8-5 setback in the opening round of play before being ousted by UT Arlington's Valeria Lopez and Augustina Serio by the same score in round two.
