SAN ANTONIO — UTSA jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Mariah Titus assisted the equalizer and punched in the game-winner in overtime to push Sam Houston State to a 2-1 victory on Sunday night at Park West Athletics Complex .
Lauren Hodgdon provided the lone goal for the Roadrunners (0-1), who fell to 6-3-1 all-time in home openers. Katherine Tesno made six saves in the contest, while Brianna Livecchi led the way with three shots.
Hodgdon put the Roadrunners on the board in the 13th minute with the first goal of her UTSA career. Following a corner kick, Cailey Elder deflected the ball toward Hodgdon in the six-yard box, and the Rosenberg native tapped it past Magen Ross for the Roadrunners’ first goal of the season.
In the 28th minute, the Bearkats (2-0) nearly found the equalizer on a break-away shot from Maddy Panozzo, but Tesno made a sliding save to keep the clean sheet.
However, the lead would not last, as Titus lobbed a pass behind the Roadrunners defense in the 42nd minute that was corralled by Allie Johnson. Johnson beat Tesno to her right and found the back of the net and the teams headed to halftime locked in a 1-1 tie.
Both squads had close calls, but neither side was able to break the deadlock over the next 45 minutes and the match headed to overtime.
As the clock ticked toward a second extra session, the Bearkats put together a run for the game-winner in the 97th minute.
Kylie Dick and Whitney Woodward combined to find Titus, who popped a shot just over the head and outstretched hands of Tesno to end the contest.
UTSA will start a stretch of nine consecutive matches away from the Alamo City with a 4:30 p.m. contest on Friday, Aug. 28, against Abilene Christian (0-2) in the opening match of the Texas Longhorns Invitational.
