UTSA announces addition of Lara Weinstein on Monday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Carrie Parnaby announced Monday that Lara Weinstein, a transfer from Texas, has signed a financial aid agreement to join her program beginning this fall.

Weinstein, who hails from Johannesburg, South Africa, will be a junior with two years of eligibility remaining after competing for the Longhorns each of the past two seasons.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lara to our UTSA family,” Parnaby said. “She will fit in perfectly with our program and the culture we have created. She will make an immediate impact on our team and will represent the university in a first-class manner. She is a great player with experience playing in high-quality events all over the world, but more than that she is a wonderful person who comes from a good family. We look forward to her arrival in August.”

As a sophomore at Texas, Weinstein posted a 78.44 stroke average in six tournaments in 2014-15. She turned in a career-low 68 in the final round of the Schooner Fall Classic en route to a 4-over-par 214 (76-70-68) in tying for 36th, the second-best 54-hole tally on the squad during the season. She carded a 228 that was highlighted by a 2-under 70 in the final round of The Alamo Invitational.

In her freshman campaign, she registered a 76.33 stroke average in six events after joining the team in January 2014. Weinstein posted a career-best finish of 19th after firing a 224 (75-73-76) at the Big 12 Championship. Her season-low 223 (75-75-73) came in a 40th-place effort at the PING/Arizona State Invitational. She carded a 225 (77-74-74) in her debut to finish 35th at the Northrup Grumman Regional.

Internationally, Weinstein was the runner-up at the Limpopop Championship and finished third at both the 2014 Ekurhuleni Stroke Play Championship and WGSA 72-Hole Individual Championship.

Prior to her time in Austin, Weinstein was a back-to-back Kenako World Junior Champion and a two-time Border Ladies winner in 2012-13. She represented South Africa in the 2013 Spirit Cup and won the Kwa-Zulu Natal Ladies Open and Gauteng North Ladies Match Play titles that same year.
