EUGENE, Ore. — Whitney Flannel matched UTSA's 19-year-old record in the high jump and became the program's first All-American in eight years following her 11th-place finish on Saturday at the NCAA Championships.
Flannel soared over the bar in 5-11 ¼ (1.81m) on her third and final attempt and that tied the standard established Lynse Leal all the way back in the 1996 campaign. The senior from West Columbia, who earned second-team All-America accolades with her placing, cleared the opening height of 5-7 ¾ (1.72m) on her first try and it took her three jumps for her to get over 5-9 ¾ (1.77m). She was unable to continue after missing on all three of her attempts at 6-0 ½ (1.84m).
South Carolina's Jeannelle Scheper and Kansas State's Kimberly Williamson both cleared 6-2 ¾ (1.90m), but Scheper was crowned this year's National Champion due to fewer misses.
Flannel, who was this season's Conference USA Champion, is the Roadrunners' first All-American since Ryanne Dupree placed sixth in the heptathlon at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
