Hayes, Shelvin advance to national semifinals in 400-meter hurdles on Friday night

AUSTIN — All-American Keyunta Hayes and Jurmarcus Shelvin both advanced to the national semifinals in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday night to lead the UTSA men's track & field team during the second day of action at this weekend's NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds.

Hayes clocked a 50.59 in the opening quarterfinal of the night, while Shelvin was one spot behind his teammate with his time of 50.65, which came in the third and final heat. Those times were good for eighth and ninth, resepctively, in the field of 24 hurdlers. The national semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Meanwhile, Dionte Robinson moved on to the 200m quarterfinals after posting a time of 21.04 in the fourth of six qualifying sections and he landed in 21st place. Saturday's national quarters are slated for 7:50 p.m. and the top three finishers in each of the three heats along with the top three times will move on to the national semifinals, which are scheduled for Wednesday, June 10.

Christopher Hall missed a spot in the semis by one spot folliowing his 13th-place performance (46.66) in the 400m and he later finished 45th in the duece (23.45).

Other Roadrunners in action on Friday included All-American Andrew Akens (shot put), Jonas Gutierrez (110m hurdles) and Victor Perez (hammer).

Akens registered a measurement of 58-1 (17.70m), which was good for 26th place in the field of 48, Gutierrez clocked a 14.41 en route to 42nd place and Perez finished 45th after tossing the implement 175-2 (53.40m).

The three-day meet will conclude on Saturday and UTSA's 1,600m relay quartet of Hall, Hayes, Robinson and Shelvin will be the other entry scheduled to compete for the Roadrunners (9:45 p.m.).
