AUSTIN — Christopher Hall (400m), Keyunta Hayes (400m hurdles) and Jurmarcus Shelvin (400m hurdles) all advanced to the national quarterfinals on Thursday night to highlight the UTSA men's track & field team opening day of action at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds.
Hall circled the Mike A. Myers Stadium oval in 46.66 en route to a second-place fnish in the sixth and final 400 meters section of the night, which was the 12th-fastest time in the field of 48, and he automatically earned a spot in the next round.
The quarterfinals will be contested at 6:15 p.m. on Friday and the top three finishers in each of the three heats along with the top three times will move on to the national semifinals, which are scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Meanwhile, Hayes and Shelvin both moved on to the quarters in the 400m hurdles.
Hayes, a two-time All-American, won the sixth opening round heat in 51.39 and that ranked eighth in the field of 48 and Shevin placed third in the fourth section in 51.53 and that was good for 12th.
Friday's quarterfinals are slated to be run at 7:45 p.m. and 12 athletes will qualify for the national semis that are scheduled for Wednesday, June 10.
Mike Medrano was the only other Roadrunner to compete on Thursday, but he was unable to advance in the 1,500m following his time of 3:59.43, which was good for 42nd place.
The thee-day meet wil continue on Friday and All-American Andrew Akens (shot put), Jonas Gutierrez (110m hurdles), Victor Perez (hammer) and Dionte Robinson (200m) will join their three teammates in action.
