HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Conference USA announced its postseason all-conference teams on Tuesday and four Roadrunners were recognized for their play during the regular season.
Second baseman Jesse Baker and catcher John Bormann each earned a spot on the first team, while outfielder Trent Bowles and right-handed pitcher Chance Kirby landed on the all-freshman squad.
Baker has been a staple in the Roadrunners’ success this spring, as he leads the club in several offensive categories. The Brenham native is batting at a .325 clip with a team-best 66 hits, 21 doubles, 14 home runs, 129 total bases and a .635 slugging percentage. The junior also ranks in the top 50 in seven statistical categories, including 15th in the NCAA in home runs and 21st in doubles.
Meanwhile, Bormann leads the league with five pickoffs and he has thrown out 18 potential base stealers this season. The senior catcher also paces C-USA in hit by pitches (17). The Seguin native is hitting .268 on the year and he ranks second on the squad in RBIs (32) and runs scored (42), tied for third in doubles (13) and fourth in hits (55).
Bowles has played and started in 48 games in the outfield as a true freshman and is batting .293. The Katy native is second on the team in doubles (16), fifth in hits (53) and he also has registered 35 runs, one triple, four home runs, 30 RBIs and six stolen bases. He ranks eighth in C-USA in doubles and hit by pitch (9).
Kirby, UTSA's lone hurler recognized this year, has played a vital role on the mound for the Roadrunners. The freshman right-hander has logged 58.1 innings through 20 appearances, including five starts. He owns a 5-3 record to go along with a 4.32 ERA and is second on the pitching staff with 52 strikeouts. Kirby’s pitched a complete game in a 2-1 victory at national-ranked Rice. In that game, he registered a career-high nine strikeouts and did not allow a walk.
No. 5 seed UTSA (32-23) will meet fourth-seeded Middle Tennessee (30-25) in the opening game of this week's C-USA Tournament at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
