EL PASO — Whitney Flannel (high jump) and Stephanie Wangui (800m) both won individual titles on Sunday to lead the UTSA women's track & field team during the final day of action at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
Flannel matched her personal best with a clearance 5-10 ½ (1.79m) for the Roadrunners' third all-time crown in the high jump and first since the 1994 season. It marked the senior's third victory of her final campaign and the eighth overall during her career.
Meanwhile, Wangui raced to a time of 2:13.85 in winning the 800 meters, which was UTSA's third victory in the event in school annals. It was the second gold medal of the spring for the junior from Leander and fourth of her career. Earlier in the day, she was runner-up in the 1,500m after crossing the finish line in 4:44.29.
The two victories pushed the program's all-time total to 63.
Emily Perez placed third (2:16.6) in the 800m and the Roadrunners' 1,600m relay of Shantel Swift, Paige Patterson, Chelsea Taylor and Jennifer Arinze also won a bronze medal for UTSA's other podium finishes during the fourth and final day of the meet. The relay quartet passed the baton in a season-best 3:38.68 for the second-fastest performance in school history.
Venessa Onwuchekwa (1:02.66) and Kaila James (1:05.00) placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 400m hurdles and Patterson (55.22) and Arinze (PR 55.29) scored the sqaud's other points with their seventh- and eighth-place finishes, respectively, in the 400m.
The Roadrunners scored a total of 56 points, which was good for a tie for sixth place in the team standings. Western Kentucky (157) edged UTEP (148) for the team title and Rice (76) was third.
UTSA will return to action in two weeks at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds in Austin. The three-day event is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 28.
