UTSA falls at Baylor on Tuesday night, 4-3

WACO — UTSA made up some late ground but allowed a run late in the game and Baylor handed the Roadrunners a 4-3 setback on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.

After the Roadrunners (30-22) struck early in the third inning, the Bears answered back with a run in the home half to tie the score at one.

Baylor (20-28) then scored single runs in each of the next two innings to jump to a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, UTSA rallied for a pair of runs to tie the score once again, this time at three.

Ben Brookover reached on a throwing error by the Bears’ second baseman and that allowed him to take second. Skyler Valentine followed with a pinch-hit single to left to score Brookover from third. Three batters later, John Bormann's bases-loaded single through the left side drove in the tying run.

The Roadrunners bullpen was unable to hold off the Baylor threat in the home half of the inning, as Patrick Herbelin allowed the go-ahead run. Herbelin took the loss in 3.2 innings of work. He allowed one run on two hits and walked two batters to go along with two strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Daniel Castano earned the win in his two innings of action in relief. Castano allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Sean Spicer picked up his staff-high seventh save of the year in his one inning of work.

UTSA outhit the home team, 10-7, with three Roadrunners registering a pair of base hits.

The Roadrunners will conclude its regular-season-ending four-game road swing this weekend at Charlotte (17-27, 10-17 C-USA). The three-game series is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (CT) on Thursday.
