Roadrunners win 11 gold medals at Saturday's UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Emily Perez won both the 800 meters and 5k to lead a parade of 11 victories by the Roadrunners at Saturday's three-team UTSA Invitational, which took place at the Park West Athletics Complex.

Perez opened her day with personal-best time of 2:14.18 en route to her victory in the 800m and she later clocked another career best, this time a 17:11.77, in the 5,000m.

Three other Roadrunners registered wins with personal records.

Shantel Swift won the 200m in 24.38, Jennifer Arinze was victorious in the 400m in 55.83 and Stephanie Wangui crossed the line first in the 800m in 2:32.32.

UTSA picked up two other gold medals in the running events, as Venessa Onwuchekwa raced to a 1:02.65 in the 400m hurdles, while the 1,600m relay quartet of Swift, Arinze, Evelyn Clark and Paige Patterson passed the baton in 3:47.68.

Meanwhile, four Roadrunners were triumphant in field event competition.

Whitney Flannel cleared 5-9 ¼ (1.76m) in winning the high jump and that was her third top-three finish to open her senior campaign.

Other winners included Zoe Meade in the long jump (17-10 ¾/5.45m), Lindsey Pew in the pole vault (12-1 ½/3.70m) and Katelynn Homb in the hammer (PR 144-2/43.95m).

UTSA will return to action next Saturday, April 11, at the Texas Invitational.
