Roadrunners get past FIU on Sunday, 4-2

MIAMI, Fla. — UTSA managed to hold off FIU in the final inning of action and the Roadrunners notched a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at FIU Baseball Stadium.

The home runs continued to pile up for the Roadrunners (18-14, 7-5 C-USA), as Jesse Baker hit his eighth of the year in the fourth to even the score at one after the home team plated a run in the third. The junior finished the day 2-for-3.

UTSA then matched its home run total of 27 from 2014 in the ninth when C.J. Pickering sailed one into the soccer field just behind the left field wall.

The Roadrunners took the lead in the fifth on Logan Kinder’s two-run single. Geonte Jackson and Trent Bowles led off the inning with a single and a double, respectively, to put runners in scoring position and Kinder drove in the pair in the following at-bat.

Nolan Trabanino worked a season-long 5.2 innings to earn his first win of the year. The southpaw allowed an unearned run on seven hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts.

FIU (14-18, 6-6 C-USA) threatened in the ninth with one run and it had the bases loaded with just one out on the board. Jeremy Filipek entered the game to get the second out of the inning and he then forced a line drive to center to end the game for his third save of the year.

Christopher Mourelle was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits and a walk in his 7.1 inning of work.

UTSA will close out its four-game road swing on Tuesday, April 7, when it plays a 2 p.m. tilt at Houston Baptist (16-14).
