EDINBURG — Diogo Casa and Yannick Junger each won in singles and doubles competition to help lead UTSA to a 5-2 victory against Texas-Pan American at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Roadrunners improved to 13-7 on the season and were victorious for the 10th time in their last 13 outings. The Broncs fell to 6-11.
Casa and Junger combined for a 6-4 win against Ethan Ammon and Hector Ramirez at No. 2 doubles, which clinched the first point of the match for the visitors after Jake Rother and Joel Rubio took care of Nikola Crvelin and Elliot Johnstone, 6-3, on the third court.
In singles, UTPA claimed a 2-1 lead with wins in the first two matches that finished, but UTSA responded by winning the other four in improving to 30-9 all-time against the Broncs.
Johnstone knotted the score at 1-1 when he defeated Rubio, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4, and Ammon gave the home side a brief lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win of his own against Joao Riquelme at the fifth spot.
The Roadrunners evened the match at 2-2 when Casa dispatched Crvelin, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 6, and they took the lead for good after Tito Moreiras rallied for a 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 triumph over Koby Jansen on the third court.
Junger also was victorious in three sets at No. 2 with a narrow 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-3 win against Ramirez, and 82nd-ranked Tomas Stillman provided the final margin with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (8), 6-3 decision against Juan Cruz Soria at the top position.
The Roadrunners will travel to Austin on Tuesday, April 7, to face No. 9 Texas (15-3) at 5 p.m. at the Caswell Tennis Center.
