SAN ANTONIO — UTSA upended Southern Miss by a score of 5-2 on Saturday in its final home match of the season.
The Roadrunners (10-11) scored the opening five points to clinch the victory, earning the doubles point at the first and third court followed by four consecutive singles victories at courts Nos. 3, 2, 6 and 1.
Miriam Rosell Canudas and Jacobea Junger dispatched Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles while senior Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Lina Hallgren clinched the doubles point with their 6-2 triumph against Elena Roca and Kathrin Waidner.
Alena Schichkova followed suit at No. 3 singles by downing Claudia Castella (6-2, 6-2) on the third court and Junger quickly downed Lisa Schneider (6-2, 6-2) at the second spot for a 3-0 Roadrunners lead.
Senior Irene Gandara Gonzalez clinched the match by defeating Karina Gurgenyan (6-2, 6-1) at No. 6, which was her team-leading 13thtriumph of the season. Rosell Canudas then increased the lead to five and she, too, won her 13th match of the spring with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 comeback win against Drescher at the top spot.
The Golden Eagles (8-10) earned the final two points when Roca defeated Hallgren in a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) super-tiebreaker at No. 5 and Kitchen downed Nicole Karaklis in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 7-5) on the fourth court.
UTSA will wrap up regular season play next Thursday, April 9, when it travels to San Marcos to square off with I-35 rival Texas State (6-5). First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
