SAN ANTONIO — UTSA used a big sixth inning, scoring all six runs, to defeat Baylor by a score of 6-3 on Tuesday night at Roadrunner Field.
UTSA (27-18) scored all six runs in the fifth inning after trailing early, 3-0.
Baylor (17-27) scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Roadrunners batted around in the fifth. Geonte Jackson got the inning started with a base hit and Logan Kinder reached two batters later via a walk. The two then scored on back-to-back base hits. UTSA then took the lead on Trent Bowles’ double that scored Matt Hilston and Jesse Baker, which made it 4-3. An error kept the inning alive, as Kevin Markham was called safe at home plate and Bowles scored the final run of the inning on a one-out single.
The Roadrunners bullpen held off the Bears in the final three-and-a-half innings.
Douglas Sefcik III pitched 2.2 innings in relief to earn the win, allowing two runs on two hits and he recorded one strikeout to go along with three walks.
Meanwhile, Kody Hessemer was tagged with the loss in 2.2 innings of action. Hessemer surrendered four runs on six hits and a walk.
Jesse Baker led the Roadrunners with a 2-for-4 performance that included one run, an RBI and a double.
UTSA will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Louisiana Tech (20-21, 5-15 C-USA). First pitch in Friday's opener is slated for 6 p.m.
