SAN ANTONIO — Brock Hartson logged eight innings to lead the Roadrunners past Southern Miss in Friday's series opener, 7-2.
Hartson (3-3) allowed two runs on six hits and recorded seven strikeouts with a pair of walks. The two runs given up were both home runs.
The Roadrunners (24-17, 10-8 C-USA) used a four-run second inning to jump to a 4-0 lead. UTSA batted around in the frame and scored the four runs on four hits and a pair of walks.
The Roadrunners followed with lone runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to cap the scoring.
Southern Miss (22-14-1, 9-8 C-USA) scored its runs in back-to-back innings. Tim Lynch hit the Golden Eagles first home run in the fourth and Austin Roussel followed in the fifth.
Jesse Baker led the Roadrunners lineup as he went 3-for-5 with a double, home run, two RBIs and a run.
Meanwhile, C.J. Pickering, Ben Brookover and J.T. Gilmore each had a pair of base hits.
Golden Eagles starter Kirk McCarty was charged with the loss in 3.1 innings of work. McCarty allowed six runs on eight hits and issued two walks with one strikeout.
Due to impending inclement weather forecasted this weekend, the teams will continue the series at 6 p.m. on Saturday (orginially scheduled for 2 p.m. then followed by 3 p.m. doubleheader).
