HOUSTON — Kendall Burton went 3-for-3 at the plate, but Laci Belovsky tied a career high with eight strikeouts en route to her third shutout of the season as Houston Baptist topped visiting UTSA 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Burton’s three hits tied a season high and were the only hits for the Roadrunners (30-15), who left six runners on base and were blanked for just the third time this season. Megan Low also reached base in all three of her plate appearances as Belovsky pitched around the senior for three walks. In the circle, Chelsea Parker (8-4) took the loss after she allowed a run on three hits in six frames.
Libby Brown went 1-for-2 and drove in the game’s only run for the Huskies (11-27), who snapped a six-game losing streak. Belovsky allowed just the three hits to Burton and trio of walks in seven scoreless frames to improve to 8-11.
Burton led off the game with a single up the middle and Low’s one-out walk put a pair of runners on base. However, Belovsky got a grounder and a fly-ball out to end the inning.
Houston Baptist plated the only run of the day in the bottom of the second. Melissa Herman reached base when she was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She advanced to third on a base hit to left and came home on Brown’s bunt single.
Parker escaped further damage with a pop up and a grounder to end the inning.
UTSA stranded a runner in scoring position in the third, fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to come up with the equalizer.
The Roadrunners had one final chance in the top of the seventh, only to see Belovsky shut the door with a perfect inning.
UTSA will return to Conference USA action this weekend with a three-game series at Florida Atlantic (30-15, 11-6 C-USA). First pitch of game one is set for 5 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, April 25.
