White downs Blue in Fifth Annual UTSA Football Fiesta Spring Game, 57-42

SAN ANTONIO — The White (offense) piled up 432 passing yards and 112 more on the ground in a 57-42 win against the Blue (defense) in the Fifth Annual UTSA Football Fiesta Spring Game presented by HealthTexas on Saturday afternoon before an estimated crowd of 2,500 at the Alamodome.

Using an adjusted scoring system that rewards the defense for stops (three points) and takeaways or safeties (five points) and also gives the offense a point for each first down, the White's quarterbacks combined to complete 34-of-52 passes and four touchdowns in the annual intrasquad scrimmage that concludes spring practice.

Blake Bogenschutz threw for a team-high 233 yards a pair of TDs on 15-of-23 passing, while Dalton Sturm put up 109 yards and a score on 9-of-12 through the air and Austin Robinson tallied 90 and a TD on 10-of-16.

Greg Campbell Jr. led all receivers with 91 yards and a score on eight catches, while Larry Stephens hauled in five passes for 44 yards and a TD. Kenny Bias (2-83) and Brady Jones (4-48) also reached paydirt, while Kerry Thomas Jr. added 69 yards on four receptions, as 12 different Roadrunners recorded a catch.

Late in the opening quarter, Campbell Jr. hauled in a long pass down the left sideline from Sturm and went 67 yards to the end zone for the first touchdown of the game.

The White's next TD came midway through the second stanza and was set up by a 51-yard pass from Bogenschutz to a wide-open Thomas Jr. that brought the ball down to the 8-yard line. Three plays later, Jarveon Williams, who rushed for 27 yards on seven carries, then punched it in from three yards out to cap a 10-play, 89-yard drive. Daniel Portillo's extra point gave the offense a 21-15 lead.

The defense, which was led by Marcos Curry's seven tackles and a sack, recorded its sixth stop of the half, but the offense put together one more scoring drive before halftime. Robinson completed 5-of-6 passes for 50 yards on the possession, the last 19 coming on a pass over the middle to Stephens for the third touchdown of the day en route to a 32-18 halftime advantage.

Portillo drilled a 28-yard field goal with 1:10 left in the third quarter that was set up by a 17-yard interception return by Romario Napoles.

On the next drive and last play of the third quarter, Carl Austin III stepped in front of a sideline pass and took it 33 yards to paydirt to get the Blue back into the game.

The White responded with a pair of fourth-quarter scoring marches to put the contest out of reach.

Bogenschutz found Bias all alone on a post route for a 75-yard TD pass and later connected with Jones from 29 yards out to help provide the final margin.

Justin Chavez and Isaiah Clay added six tackles apiece for the Blue and Jason Neill pitched in three tackles, including 1.5 for loss.

UTSA will open the 2015 campaign on Thursday, Sept. 3, at Arizona and its home opener is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, against Kansas State.
