UTSA announces 2014 award winners at football banquet

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA Football program held its annual awards banquet on Friday night at Pedrotti's North Wind Ranch and announced its award winners from this past season.

Below is a list of this year's honorees recognized at Friday's banquet.

Offensive Most Valuable Player
David Glasco II, Sr., RB
A leader both on and off the field since the program’s inception back in 2010, Glasco II had a senior campaign that saw him start all 12 games and rush for a team-leading 570 yards and five touchdowns on 150 carries (3.8 avg.) to become the program’s all-time leader in all three categories.

Defensive Most Valuable Player
Triston Wade, Sr., S
The two-time team captain was one of 15 Jim Thorpe Award semifinalists and a second-team All-Conference USA honoree. The Tyler native recorded a team-leading 86 tackles, 14 pass breakups, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Special Teams Most Valuable Player
Kristian Stern, Sr., P
Stern punted a program-record 83 times and averaged 41.2 yards per boot last year, including a school-record 69-yarder at Oklahoma State, en route to honorable mention Conference USA laurels. Twelve of his kicks traveled at least 50 yards, 41 resulted in fair catches and 30 were dropped inside the 20-yard line.

Hammer Award
Ashaad Mabry, Sr., DT
Each week of the fall, the defense presents the player that had the best hit of the game with the Hammer Award. The player who wins is given a 10-pound sledgehammer to carry onto the field the following game and the winner’s number is painted on the handle. At the end of the year, the player with the most wins is given the hammer to keep. Last season, the hammer was awarded to six different players and Mabry won it twice.

National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete; first-team Academic All-American; Conference USA all-academic team

Lynn Hickey Excellence Award
Seth Grubb, Sr., WR
Named after UTSA's Director of Athletics, this honor goes to the player who best embodies all aspects of UTSA Football. Grubb was a part of UTSA’s Original 18 this past season, He began his career as a walk-on during the 2010 practice season and went on to earn a scholarship. The native of La Vernia saw action in 34 games during his career, catching 19 passes for 321 yards, but his contributions went beyond the playing field.
