SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will take on I-35 rival Texas State for the third time this year at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in San Marcos.
Each team has taken one meeting this spring with UTSA winning the last matchup, 5-4 at Roadrunner Field. Freshman Chance Kirby pitched a season-best seven innings and struck out a career-high eight batters for the win. Cody Brannon closed out the contest for the save. Four Roadrunners also registered multiple hits with Jesse Baker going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run.
UTSA (21-15) is coming off last weekend's series win against Old Dominion. The Roadrunners managed to sweep Friday’s doubleheader before dropping Saturday's series finale.
Tyler Straub leads the Roadrunners with a .345 batting average. The Albuquerque, N.M., native is tied for second in hits (41) and he also has eight doubles, two home runs, 19 RBIs, 19 runs and seven stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Jesse Baker is hitting at a .333 clip and leads the team in home runs (10) and doubles (12). Baker has hit five homers in his last seven games and the junior is eight away from tying the program's single-season record.
Taking the mound for the Roadrunners on Tuesday night will be southpaw Nolan Trabanino. The junior has logged 35.2 innings over nine appearances. Trabanino has struck out 25 batters and walked eight on the season.
Texas State (17-17-1) will welcome UTSA coming off a series loss at Arkansas-Little Rock. The Bobcats won the series finale 10-4 and now have won three of their last five contests.
Granger Studdard leads Texas State's season box with a .286 average. Studdard leads the team in hits (38) and triples (2) and is second in doubles (6), home runs (7) and RBIs (21).
Cory Geisler will be making his third start of the year. The left-hander carries a 2-0 mark and 4.63 ERA and he also has a pair of saves to go along with 16 strikeouts in 23.1 innings.
Texas State leads the all-time series, 53-31.
