DENTON — North Texas scored four runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 5-2 win over UTSA to take the three-game series on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.
Tess Soejfe went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer to provide the offense for the Roadrunners (27-14, 9-5 C-USA), who dropped their first Conference USA series of the season. Jade Smith went 2-for-3 for UTSA, while Kelsi Ott took the loss after she allowed three runs on four hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
Mallory Land led the Mean Green (16-23, 8-9 C-USA) with a 3-for-4 day at the plate to go along with an RBI and Stacey Underwood earned her second win in as many days with three scoreless innings of relief to improve to 8-4.
North Texas threatened to get on the board first when it loaded the bases in the third inning with the help of two UTSA errors. However, Vivian Tijerina fielded a grounder and stepped on third before she threw a runner out at home. Ott then ended the inning with a grounder to keep the contest scoreless.
Mean Green starter Monique Garcia opened the game with four strikeouts in 3.1 no-hit innings, before UTSA could put a hit on the board. A walk to Tijerina and fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth brought Soefje to the plate.
Soefje, a native of Frisco, ran the count full and launched a two-run homer over the scoreboard in left-center field. The blast was the eighth round-tripper of the spring for the sophomore and it gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
However, North Texas rallied for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to jump ahead 4-2. One run scored on an illegal pitch before the Mean Green strung together three consecutive RBI singles.
The home squad tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with another two-out hit, this time from Land to extend the lead to 5-2.
UTSA brought the tying run to the plate with singles from Smith and Kendall Burton, but the Mean Green closed out the win and the series victory with a double play.
The Roadrunners will conclude their 12-game road stretch at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, when they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (13-24-1) at Chapman Field.
