SAN ANTONIO — UTSA downed Trinity, 6-1, in the final home match of the season on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners improved to 14-8 on the season with their 12th win in the last 16 contests, while Tiger, who are ranked seventh nationally in NCAA Division III fell to 12-8.
All three doubles contests were played out and all three were won by the 74th-ranked Roadrunners to earn the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Diogo Casa and Eric Buchalter partnered up to defeat Trinity’s Alvaro Hobbs and Adam Krull, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. The tandem of Jose Gonzalez and Joel Rubio dispatched Charlie Curtis and Chas Mayer by an 8-5 score on the third court, while Mark Ginting and Tomas Stillman downed Jordan Mayer and Aaron Skinner, 8-3 on center court to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles, the Runners were victorious in five of the six matches.
Rubio, a senior from Arnedo, Spain, defeated Krull at the top spot, 6-3, 6-0, for a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers picked up their sole point with Chas Mayer beating Christian Carrillo, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5, but the home team responded by winning the remaining five contests.
Rother beat Kevin Lee, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 and Casa’s seventh consecutive singles victory came against Skinner, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3.
Joao Riquelme came out on top against Mayer in a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) decision at No.2, proceeded by Mark Ginting’s triumph over Charlie Curtis, 6-3, 6-7 (4-10), 1-0 (10-7), at No. 4.
The Roadrunners will look to carry their momentum into the upcoming Conference USA Tournament on April 17-19 in Norfolk, Va.
