GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Led by a 26th-place finish from Brogan Townend, UTSA placed 12th at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, which wrapped up Sunday at Mark Bostick Golf Course (6,002 yards/par 72).
Townend led all Roadrunners in the final round with a 4-over-par 74 that was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on the par-5 12th and par-4 13th. The junior from England tied for 26th with a 228 (79-75-74).
Behind Townend's top-30 showing, UTSA placed 12th in a field that featured nine top-50 teams. The Roadrunners carded a 941 (317-301-323) to finish three shots ahead of Missouri and Penn State, who both shot 944, and comfortably in front of Clemson (954).
Nikki Long posted UTSA's second-best final-round score with an 81 and the freshman from San Antonio Johnson High School tied for 35th with a 231 (72-78-81).
Aimee Ponte opened the 54-hole tournament with rounds of 76 and 72 to put her in the top 10 entering the final round, but the sophomore fell to 38th (232) after an 84.
Libby Thomas, a sophomore from Midland, provided the other counting score with an 84 on Sunday.
No. 11 Arizona captured the team title with an 879 behind individual medalist Manon Gidali's 5-over 215 (73-72-70). The Wildcats were followed by No. 33 Florida (889), No. 37 Florida State (902), Denver (907) and No. 21 UCF (908) in the top five.
The Roadrunners will return to the course on March 27-29 when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the LSU Tiger Classic.
