UTSA gets past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night, 4-3

CORPUS CHRISTI — Logan Onda pitched 6.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen and UTSA ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night at Chapman Field.

Onda (1-0) scattered four hits and struck out a career-high six batters to earn the win.

Chance Kirby got his second starting nod of the season but received a no decision in 2.2 innings of action. Kirby gave up all three Islander runs.

Islanders starter Matt Danton (1-1) was charged with the loss in two innings on the bump. Danton, who came into the contest with an unblemished ERA, gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out one.

After the home team jumped on the board early with a score in the first inning, the Roadrunners (7-5) plated three runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead.

First baseman Geonte Jackson got the second inning started on a one-out single. He then came around to score on C.J. Pickering’s RBI double. A fielding error by the Islanders shortstop kept the inning alive and at one out and allowed for Skyler Valentine to reach first.  Back-to-back errors in the following at-bat scored Valentine and Pickering for the lead.

The Roadrunners tacked on another run in the top third before Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-3) made it a one-run game in the bottom half with a pair of runs.

Onda, who entered the game in the bottom third, put six straight zeros and pitched three 1-2-3 innings. The right-hander also did not allow a walk for the 11th consecutive outing, starting with his last nine appearances of the 2014 season.

UTSA tallied 13 hits on the night with Kevin Markham, John Bormann, Jackson and Pickering each tallying two.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday when they open a three-game series against UC Irvine (3-7). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bird Bath.
