SAN ANTONIO — No. 25 Florida Atlantic rallied late for a 9-5 victory at UTSA in Sunday's rubber game of this weekend's Conference USA series.
The Roadrunners (15-13, 5-4 C-USA) used seven total pitchers in the loss, including five in the seventh inning alone, as the Owls (22-6, 6-3 C-USA) batted around en route to scoring five times.
Logan Onda was charged with the loss in his inning of action. Onda allowed two runs on one hit and walked a pair of batters.
After the visiting team went up 2-0 on back-to-back home runs in the third and fourth, UTSA put together a two-out rally in the fifth.
Geonte Jackson laced a ball up the middle for a base hit, a wild pitch moved him to second and he crossed home plate on Jesse Baker’s RBI single.
FAU extended its lead in the sixth, but the home half saw C.J. Pickering blast a two-run home run to knot the score at three.
After scoring five in the seventh, the Owls continued the scoring onslaught in the eighth, as Roman Collins hit Florida Atlantic’s third home run of the game to make it 9-3.
Pickering chipped into the Owls’ lead in the eighth with his second homer of the game and the sophomore third baseman finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Matt Hilston also scored in the eighth for the final run of the game.
Seth McGarry picked up the win following three innings of work. McGarry allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one.
UTSA will complete its nine-game home stand on Tuesday, March 31, when it welcomes I-35 rival Texas State (12-14-1) for a 6 p.m. contest.
